Brooks family histories, 1938 and 1995-2001.

Collection contains the Brooks Edge Tool Manufacturing, Brooksville, New Haven, Vt., dated 1995, with a revision dated 1998: an account of the Brooks family business manufacturing axes and other edge tools in 19th century Middlebury and New Haven, Vt., with photographs of a number of surviving Brooks tools, and history of the family itself from the middle of the 18th century in Connecticut, to the early 20th in Vermont. Collection contains the Life of Milton Albigence Brooks, born in Middlebury, Vt., 1859, a draft dated 1996 and revision dated 1998: a biography of Ralph Brooks' grandfather, who was a businessman and political figure in Middlebury, serving as town clerk and justice of the peace, and also had a keen interest in Morgan horses. Late in life, he moved to Massachusetts, and died in Brookline in 1925. This account also draws on Middlebury newspapers and other sources in the Sheldon Museum. Collection contains the Dog Team Tavern Inn, Tea Room Tavern Restaurant and Gift Shoppe of Sir Wilfred and Lady Anne Grenfell, 2001: a compilation of newspaper articles, publicity material, photographs and postcards of the Dog Team Tavern, occupying the former site of the Brooks Edge Tool Factory, Brooksville, Vt. Collection contains the petition of Daniel Pettibone for the renewal of his patent for welding cast steel to iron, 1818: photocopy of the renewal petition, as the original patent, granted to Pettibone, Ezekiel Chapman and Josiah Nichols, all of Middlebury, Vt., in 1802, could not be found when requested by Ralph Brooks. The process made possible the development of the edge tool industry by the Brooks family. Collection contains the Advent Church records of Brooksville Vt.: photocopy courtesy of the University of Vermont of the records of the church, founded in 1854. The members included some of the Brooks family. The photocopies include both the original handwritten document and a typed transcription, along with a newspaper article from the Burlington Free Press in 1938 concerning the transfer of the long unused church building to Grenfell Labrador Industries, Inc. for use as a community house and museum. Collection contains Brooks reunion 2000: records of a Brooks family reunion in Middlebury, Vt., including information on the history of New Haven and Brooksville and the development of the edge tool industry.

Members of the Brooks family first came to New Haven, Vt. in 1808 or 1809, and Bezaleel Brooks (1785-1849) established a blacksmith business there in 1810. In 1822 he moved his business and home to Middlebury; in 1827 he advertised axes and edge tools. In 1835 the family moved to Moriah, N.Y., and in 1843, they moved back to New Haven, Vt., settling in Beeman's Hollow, which became known as Brooksville. In 1936 Sir Wilfred and lady Anne Grenfell opened the Dog Team Tavern in Brooksville as a restaurant, hotel, and sales outlet for handicrafts to support the work of the International Grenfell Association in Labrador. It replaced a restaurant and shop of the same name opened in Ferrisburgh, Vt. in 1931. In 1936 the restaurant was sold to Eben and Catherine Joy and ceased to be connected to the Grenfell Association.
